GLENDALE HOT DOGS

In 1953, Glendale Meats issued an unnumbered set of cards of the Detroit Tigers.  These cards were inserted in packages of hot dogs.   The back of the card has and ad for prizes including a trip for two to the World Series.  There were over 150 prizes offered.  The winners were the people that sent in the most cards.  This kind of contest, and the limited distribution area makes this set one of the more cards to acquire.  The complete set is 28 players.   Joe Ginsberg was traded away in the middle of the year, and Art Houtteman was traded early in the year.  It appears that Glendale stopped the production of these two players when they were traded.  This makes the Houtteman card extremely scarce and is the key card in this issue.  Since the cards were inserted into packages of hot dogs, Staining and creases are the norm and high grade examples are very difficult to find and command very high prices.
